It’s times like this that I wish Homestuck wasn’t such an amazing comic and I could just quit it and be done.
But i’m too invested in both the comic and the fandom.
The comic itself has me wrapped around it’s little finger, and the…
Wow… a lot to go through here! I’ll just reblog this whole chain, since i’m replying to both Alex ‘n seerofsarcasm here (anyone interested can click the links)
I do think voicing (politely!) opinions and ideas regarding being, at some point, able to work out something made by fans is not a bad idea. Rachel mentioned before that they are looking into it, remember? Making a petition is, I think, not exactly an effective thing; on top of online petitions not meaning too much (they only take a few seconds to sign), sheer volumes of signatures of fans don’t amount to much. in the end, this is a legal thing! and how much do us fans know about copyright?
how much does anyone reblogging know about copyright infringement, and all the legal technicalities of it? on how to sell things through a company, or make a “deal” with them? I see a lot of people saying “we’ll share the profits!”, but can you lay out a legal contract for that, exactly? to the letter? how it would work, how the contract would be laid out, if a contract is even the right thing at all in this situation?? percentages, shipping? do you really know how this legal mumbo jumbo works?
……….I rather doubt it!!
and I dont either; I don’t think any of us without a background in this sort of thing do.
so while making a petition might seem like something that would be helpful, in all honestly I think it would be putting effort into nothing much. us fans can’t come up with solutions to go about how to sell stuff…we dont know ANYTHING about copyright! we don’t know how this would work; What Pumpkin is a COMPANY, there would be contracts and all sorts of legal jargon involved. and do any of you replying really know anything about how that would work? it’s certainly a puzzle to solve, but its one for the What Pumpkin crew to do so.
…..and they are not obligated to, either!
that’s something that I think a lot of people miss with this. yes, it can negatively affect fans, in ways like being unable to make a few extra bucks making something they enjoy, or being able to help out a friend with their cosplay when materials are expensive. but in the end, the WP team isn’t obligated to do anything at all!!! they’re not obligated to look for solutions to fanmade things being sold at some point, but as Rachel said, they are!
it’s really frustrating to me, a lot of these “WOW, HOW GREEDY!!!!” attitudes, when it seems to me that it has little to do with money at all - more with being able to hold copyright claims. and even if it does, what ground do we have to stand and complain that we can’t make money off someone else’s ideas?
that turned out pretty long, but man, I’ve seen a lot of this everywhere. I think it is a good idea to give ideas to the WP team! Polite suggestions are always cool from what it seems to me. but petitions - and angry claims to denounce the comic because you cannot make money off it - seem unnecessary to me.

I will make them myself if I want to, thank you very much. I wasn’t saying I expected What Pumpkin to produce them.
